After practicing medicine for nearly 20 years I have had the opportunity to learn a great deal about the good and not so good aspects of conventional medicine. As for the good aspects, I can say that the medical treatments and advances being made are wonderful in so many positive ways. I never had a problem with the practice of OB/GYN from day one, in terms of the quality of care I was able to give my patients.

A few years ago; however, I had to stop practicing medicine due to serious family matters. During this time I was able to reflect about many things relating to my career in medicine. What I would come to learn about the impact of mindful living on one’s health has been truly amazing. In my mind, the absolute best health one can achieve is through the use of conventional medicine while living a mindful lifestyle. This may sound like a simple suggestion, but tragically it is not practiced by the majority of the population in this fast-paced society we now live in. As for the less favorable aspects of conventional medicine,  it is simply the close-minded attitude that exists when it comes to acknowledging the health benefits of mindful living. A mindful life of yoga, meditation, healthy eating etc. is invaluable if one wishes to achieve optimal health. Furthermore, we are sending the wrong message to our children by failing to adopt a lifestyle defined by mindful behavior. I have been devoting my time online to educating women through various channels about the health benefits of adding mindful living to their lives. I hope to have an impact on some people and on the conventional medical community as a whole. There is a place for medicine to coexist with a mindful lifestyle. I am also hopeful that the medical schools will continue to evolve as they have been, incorporating the aspects of mindful living into their school curriculum. I hope my mission rings true as it is something that inspires me more every day as I see the positive impact of taking mindful control of your life and your health. I do want to reiterate that in no way should the practice of medicine change. It should   simply become open-minded to the health benefits of holistic practices that have been around for thousands of years!

Regards,

Doug Penta MD, OB/GYN
