Another son

This time of year we focus on mother. After all, this past weekend it was Mother’s Day. Here’s another story from our family.

A few weeks ago our daughter had a son. You might say, “So what? That’s not so unusual.” And you would be right. The birth of a baby boy, while like all life is a miracle in itself, is not unusual. However, in this case the little boy has nine brothers. Our daughter and her husband have 10 sons, no daughters, just sons. The oldest is nearly 17, and immediately above the newborn are twins.

You can imagine that mother is a busy lady. Thankfully, like in all happy large families, the children are taught from birth almost that belonging to the family means they all have to pitch in. It makes no difference whether they are boys or girls, there are chores to be done, and they need to be done in good harmony and happiness. While that’s the goal, it is not always achieved, and needs to be actively taught and promoted by dad and mum, as well as by all the siblings.

My wife and I have always seen children as a blessing, a gift from God. It’s not the number, how many there are, or their sex which was important to us. Each grandchild is an individual who is in him or herself a complete blessing. However, we did wonder when the husband rang and told us that they had another boy, and we were moved to hear his gladness that all was well with both mother and child, and that they were thankful for this, their tenth son.

And you should have heard the laughter and gladness from his brothers. When he came home from hospital the little lad was noisily welcomed by a happy masculine throng.
