Amazing Grace

This week The United States of America witnessed Amazing Grace.

It Witnessed this Grace in the aftermath of the Emanuel 9 who were gunned down in their historic church while practicing their faith by a twisted man with blinding hate in his heart.

Following the massacre, the families of the 9 faced the killer in a court of law and, in an act of incredible courage, forgave him.

In so doing they sentenced he and his ilk to the depths of hell forever.

The country witnessed Amazing Grace from the Governor of South Carolina who, in a remarkable about face, pledged to help remove the confederate flag from the grounds of the capital building.

Other states and big name stores soon followed suit.

Even Nascar is looking at how they can keep that flag out of their venues.

Amazing Grace.

We witnessed Grace from a Supreme Court that heretofore sought only to protect the powerful and the rich. Not This week.

This week they rendered 3 historic decisions that will undergird and protect Americans from some of their most demonic inclinations.

They chose to not strip Health care from millions and millions of people.

They chose to not allow the discriminators to reign free by keeping the Fair Housing Act intact This is one of our most important civil right laws and it remains so today.

They chose to let those who love- All those who love, marry.

The dissenters were loud and sometimes ugly in their descent but the country kept the rights that have been hard fought and hard won protected from the haters, the naysayers  and the losers.

Amazing Grace was a President who stood before the deeply wounded Charlestonians and South Carolinians and as he delivered the Eulogy for Rev. Clementa Pinckney, he took the country on a tour of what  Amazing Grace looks like.

The Presidents' haters and detractors will be blinded to the message but history will record this as one of the most consequential pieces of oratory in our long and winding history.

As the President said of the Rev Pinckney:

"What a good man. Sometimes I think that's the best thing to hope for when you're eulogized -- after all the words and recitations and resumes are read, to just say someone was a good man.

Mr. President you will be remembered as a good man and thank you for leading this country through  a heartbreaking time.

I watched the Presidents eulogy live as he gave it on Friday. I watched it again later that night as I realized the power that words can have to help heal.

I sang right along with the President as he led the mourners in Amazing Grace.

This week the United States of America witnessed Amazing Grace coming from many quarters. From the depth of pain and heartbreak we may emerge a stronger, kinder more reflective county and wouldn’t that just be amazing and full of grace.
