One of the great difficulties with people knowing me - is for me to know myself first - I think something interesting to add here is that at one point in my art life I was looking for a challenge as to how to create something greater than what I was able to do at that point - for example - for many years when people said to me - what do you photograph (referring to my photography career) I would say simply - anything that anyone can see - but then I thought - gee - how can I do something greater than that - and so I said - what is it that so many people are talking about - and the answer to that - that I came up with - is something that so many people are talking about which is spirit or spiritually - and so I thought more about how I could capture spirit in a photograph - well it is not something that we can see (so not something that can be captured with film that I was utilizing at the time) - but then I thought more and I came up with the thought that although we cannot see it itself (spirit) - very often we can see the results of spirit on something physical - so I utilized the mention in the Bible that God blew the spirit into man - and so I took a candle - had my wife (who was my girlfriend at that time) hold her black velvet hat behind that candle and with the camera on a tripod (something that I rarely utilize by the way) I blew into the candle and did a long exposure on the candle with me blowing into it - the result that I got was something that looked to me like the shape of a dove taking off in flight - and so I called it - "The Universal Spirit of Peace" - Interestingly enough my mother's name in Armenian means Dove and the Dove is often (in many circles) referenced as the symbol for Peace - and so her spirit of Peace of course is inside of me -
