Unexpected Surprises

Yesterday I had a number of those unexpected surprises that keeps your adrenaline
running all day. We are part owners of 5 horses. One of these horses is named "Ride
A Rock Horse". He is trained by Peter Moody at Caulfield in Victoria, Australia.

I have come to know and love the racing scene. It's a terrific feeling going along
to the races when you have a horse competing. The atmosphere in the stables and the mounting yard is wonderful and I spend a lot of time out there before each race.

Unexpected Surprise No 1.

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to go to Sandown Racecourse in Melbourne to watch the Caulfield Barrier Trials. We arrived at 7am. I had never been there before.

My first unexpected surprise was being participant to the beautiful, tranquil surroundings and the crisp, clean air. No crowds. No race callers were there so you could soak in the atmosphere and hear the horses pounding down the track and listen to their breathing while watching the steam rise from their nostrils and mouths. To me, it was absolutely perfect....

Unexpected Surprise No 2.

I started chatting to other owners who'd come to watch the trials. This is the joy
of racing. You get to meet other owners and many new friendships can be forged.

Anyway, during our chat, it was established that we both had horses trained by
Peter Moody.

They were impressed that we'd driven 3 hours to watch the trial.

I was impressed by the fact that they owned Black Caviar...

I was so excited. We didn't expect that Black Caviar would be trialling there as
well.

Have you heard of Black Caviar?

She is currently the most famous Australian racehorse who has won all of her 22
races. She has had much publicity around the world and recently returned from her
Ascot win in the UK.

Anyway, over to the mounting yard we went to watch her warming up. It was great
that she had recovered from her injury sustained in the UK. It was also interesting
that they kept everything very quiet so there were no crowds around watching...

Unexpected Surprise No 3

Caviar performed beautifully in Barrier Trial 6

Ride A Rock Horse performed well in Trial 7.

Now the aim of these Barrier Trials is not to 'win'. It gives trainers an idea of
how the horses are doing before they enter their next race. It tests the horses'
fitness and can give people some inside information for their next bet.
Barrier trials are also an important stepping-stone for Jockeys. All jockeys need
to participate in these trials in order to graduate to a senior jockey.

Aside from the non-competitive event, the times are given out. My husband couldn't help himself. He looked at all trial results and times for the day and established
that, if we had run in the same Barrier Trial as Black Caviar, Ride A Rock Horse
would have come 3rd. That's pretty impressive, I feel. A small feather to hang on
our hat!!

Now, Ride A Rock Horse and Black Caviar are by no means in the same league at all
and I am not trying to say they are.

Caviar is world-famous 6-year-old mare and Rocky is a 3-year-old gelding. Caviar is
a magnificent group 1 horse and we have yet to make it to that class.

Unexpected surprises happen a lot. You just need to recognise them when they occur.

I just wanted to share mine. It's not every day that you get to rub shoulders with
Equine Royalty!
